The 20th annual
Simsbury Fly-in at Simsbury Airport was held on September 25,
2005 by the Simsbury Flying Club. Besides providing stand-by
coverage for the day's events, members of the Simsbury Volunteer
Fire Company along with the Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance
Association, gave a rescue demonstration simulating a two-car
motor vehicle accident with entrapped occupants. After
extrication, the
victim was then packaged in preparation for transport by
Life
Star Air Ambulance.
Personnel begin to stabilize the vehicles while others begin to offload the needed tools for extrication. With stabilization complete, the process of extrication can begin. Adjustable rescue struts are used to safely stabilize this vehicle perched in a precarious position. With the roof removed, better access to the victim is gained. Firefighter Nick Civitillo uses a commercial battery-operated reciprocating saw to remove the roof of the second vehicle. Fire and EMS personnel work to carefully remove the occupant. Under the supervision of Lt. Kristin Kelley, Firefighter Drew Swiniarski uses the "Jaws of Life" to remove the vehicle's door. While awaiting the arrival of Life Star, the deployment of a vehicular airbag is demonstrated. Transporting the victim to the landing zone. Life Star personnel maintain a watch as the helicopter is shut down. Personnel keep a safe distance while Life Star completes its landing procedures. The victim will be packaged for flight and then handed-off to the Life Star crew. The victim is secured inside the aircraft.
