Used by the Cullman Brothers
tobacco company to house the seasonal workforce, the
Morehouse Dormitory was
situated near the corner of Firetown Road and Barn Door Hills
Road. The complex also contained many outbuildings including a
large concrete-block warehouse which was used to store potatoes
that were grown by the company.
The Simsbury Volunteer Fire
Company was at their usual Monday night drill on April 19, 1982
when they were dispatched to the potato barn. First arriving
units encountered a heavy fire condition in the roof of the
structure. Multiple hand lines were deployed and a deck gun was
put into action. With the amount of fire in the roof and the age
of the building, it was determined to be too dangerous to mount
an interior attack. Tower 12 arrived and its aerial was
utilized to send elevated streams against the fire.
The impressive blaze was set
against a magnificent evening sky which made for some dramatic
images. It was determined that wayward youths had intentionally
set the fire.
