Early on the afternoon of
January 13, 2006, the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company was
dispatched by the local 911 operator to Gino's Upholstering &
Tailor Shop at 568 Hopmeadow Street for a working structure
fire. The first arriving officer reported heavy fire in the rear
of the building involving all floors. The first arriving engine
company was ordered to catch the hydrant and lay a supply line
and a mutual aid request was transmitted to the Town of Avon.
Two hand lines were quickly
deployed and interior crews made an aggressive attack
simultaneously on the first and second floors while vertical
ventilation was ordered. The main body of the fire was quickly
knocked down but not before it had extended to the third floor.
With no apparent means of access to the upper floor, personnel
used hand tools and power saws to break through the second-floor
ceiling to gain access to the space above. A ladder was placed
to the third-floor window in the front of the structure and a
team worked from the safety of the ladder to bring the remaining
body of fire under control.
