On May 19, 2006, the Simsbury
Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to Hopmeadow Street south
of Route 315 for a delivery box truck containing two occupants
which had left the roadway, traveled up an embankment and was in
danger of toppling over. A combination of long 4x4 cribbing,
rescue struts and utility lines were used to stabilize the
vehicles so that the occupants could safely exit. Additionally,
a wooden box crib was built under the vehicle to provide extra
stabilization, and the vehicle was gently eased off the incline
using Rescue 14's winch.
Deputy Chief Michael Jepeal does a size-up of the situation. Firefighter Ron Kasulaitis uses Rescue 14's 4x4 long cribbing to begin to stabilize the vehicle. Rescue struts are added to increase the stability. The bracing is secured in place by attaching ratchet straps from the base of the stabilization to the frame of the vehicle to prevent kick-out. After some box cribbing is added for additional stability, the vehicle is gently eased off the incline by Rescue 14's winch.
