On the morning of May 25, 2006,
the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to Hopmeadow
Street south of Route 315 for an overturned eighteen-wheeler. A
dump truck carrying a load of asphalt and towing a flat-bed
trailer with paving machinery had left the roadway, traveled
down an embankment and come to rest on its roof on the adjacent
bike path. A few pedestrians were in the area at the time of the
accident but fortunately both they, and the vehicle's operator
all escaped serious injury.
The Simsbury Volunteer Fire
Company remained on-scene throughout the day in support of the
salvage operation. An environmental services contractor
responded to offload the vehicle's fuel, control other fluid
spills and to remove all hazardous materials from the scene and
soil. A towing company also responded with heavy wreckers to
disentangle the vehicle, trailer and machinery, and remove them
from the scene.
The dump truck came to rest inverted on the bike path. Although entangled in the trees, the trailer did not separate from the truck. Chief Leonard Mathiason talks with Chief Michael Jepeal. The damaged asphalt paver is freed from entanglement. Environmental services personnel offload the vehicle's fuel tanks. Removing the trees so that the trailer and equipment can be freed. Four tow trucks were used to support and stabilize the trailer while the vegetation was removed, and then the trailer was lowered to the ground.
